Freelance platform fees: read the current contract information
Fees can depend on the platform, service and contract type. Open the official help and the actual offer details before accepting, rather than relying on an old screenshot or a social-media claim. Do not quote a universal percentage without verifying it. Identify which charges fall on you and which, if any, are the client’s responsibility.
Separate different costs
Service charges, payment processing, currency conversion, taxes and withdrawal costs are not interchangeable. Some may be charged by third parties. Check eligibility, minimums and supported countries directly. A platform fee being clear does not mean the whole route is economical. Keep the assumptions visible when comparing payment methods or different kinds of work.

Calculate the usable amount
Use the proposed contract value and verified charges to estimate what remains before other business expenses. Label uncertain values as estimates. Include software, subcontracting and delivery costs separately. This planning calculation is not formal tax advice. A large headline fee can still produce poor effective earnings if substantial revisions, sales effort or support are omitted.
Review the rules behind protection
Check milestone funding, time tracking, submission and dispute requirements that apply to the selected contract. Do not move payments off-platform to avoid a fee if that violates terms or removes important safeguards. Upwork’s pricing discussion shows that contract structure changes responsibilities; read the current detailed policy for the protection you intend to rely on.
Decide with the whole project in view
Compare the offer with your capability, schedule and risk tolerance. Ask questions before accepting when charges or requirements are unclear. Save the relevant agreement and fee information for your records. The objective is not to find a route with a magically zero cost, but to understand the net economics and obligations of the work you approve.
