Least privilege: define access around the task
Least privilege means limiting access to what is needed for authorized work. A writer may need to edit drafts without managing payments, plugins or other users. A reporting integration may need to read records without deleting them. Start by naming the task and the systems involved, not by granting administrator access to avoid thinking about permissions. The correct boundary depends on the actual product and workflow, so test supported roles against real requirements.
Separate identities and responsibilities
Use individual accounts where possible so activity can be associated with the right person and access can be removed independently. Shared credentials make ownership and offboarding harder. Separate routine work from privileged administration when the service supports it. Do not make one contractor’s personal email the only recovery route for a business account. The business owner needs an approved way to manage access and recover the system after the engagement ends.

Apply the idea to software credentials
An automation token should not receive broad permissions simply because the example setup uses them. GitHub’s secure-use reference recommends minimum permissions for credentials and workflow tokens, increasing access only where a job requires it. Review what each integration can read, change and transmit. Prefer supported short-lived, well-scoped authentication where appropriate. Do not invent token settings or assume a credential name proves that its permissions are limited.
Add temporary access with an end condition
Some work legitimately needs elevated access, such as an approved maintenance task. Document the reason, who approves it and when it will be reviewed or removed. Avoid leaving emergency access permanently open after the immediate problem is resolved. Where a provider offers time-limited roles or approval steps, use them according to policy. If the system lacks those features, establish a manual review process rather than pretending the access expires automatically.
Test before reducing critical permissions
Permission changes can break deployments, updates or recovery. Review dependencies and test through a safe process before changing production access. The WordPress hardening handbook warns that database privilege restrictions can interfere with upgrades. Least privilege is not a slogan for removing capabilities blindly. Keep an authorized rollback route and involve a qualified administrator when the effect is unclear. Reducing unnecessary access should improve resilience, not make ordinary maintenance impossible.

Review access when the work changes
Check privileged accounts, integrations and obsolete credentials at handover and on a recurring schedule. Remove what is no longer needed and rotate exposed or shared secrets appropriately. Record the task each remaining permission supports. A practical review question is: if this account were misused today, what could it affect? Least privilege reduces the possible impact, but still needs secure authentication, monitoring and incident response. It does not guarantee that authorized users always act safely.
