API test cases should explain how to reproduce a check and how to judge its outcome. A screenshot of a successful request is not enough. Useful cases connect the method, endpoint, input and initial state to an expected result, including the records that should or should not change after the request.
Record the complete test boundary
Give each case an identifier and purpose. Include the environment, API version, authentication role, preconditions, method, path and relevant headers. Keep secrets in approved environment variables rather than the case text. Use synthetic data and explain how fixtures are created so another tester can reproduce the same state.

Assert more than a status code
Specify the expected status, response shape and meaningful field values. For writes, check the resulting state and relevant side effects. An HTTP success response can still contain incorrect totals, expose extra fields or fail to create the intended record. Define invalid-input cases alongside the happy path, using the documented error contract.
Make cleanup and isolation explicit
Describe what the case creates and how the test environment is restored. Tests should not depend on an unexplained order or stale shared records. Record actual results with timestamps and identifiers that are safe to share. If a defect is found, connect the failed case to a focused bug report and a later retest.
A practical checklist
- Write a purpose and unique case identifier.
- Record preconditions and non-secret inputs.
- Specify response and state assertions.
- Include invalid-input and permission cases.
- Document cleanup and retest evidence.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a case checks creation of a draft order in a sandbox. It specifies the account role, synthetic product, expected status and returned order identifier. A follow-up read confirms the stored quantity, and cleanup removes only that test record. A second case submits an invalid quantity and expects no order to be created.

Common questions
Must every test use a new account? Not necessarily; fixtures should match the isolation needs. Should tokens appear in reports? No. Is a passing response-body assertion enough for a write? Often not; verify relevant persisted state and agreed side effects.
What to do next
Build a small reusable case template and have another person run one case from it. Missing assumptions become obvious when the original author is not guiding every step.
