Python CSV DictReader maps row values to field names, making column meaning easier to follow. That convenience does not remove the need to validate headers. Duplicate, unexpected or missing names can make a record ambiguous, so approve the schema before using a dictionary-based import for client work.
Review the header before processing records
Unless fieldnames are supplied, DictReader uses the first row as field names. Confirm the actual names and required columns. Reject duplicate headers where the schema needs unique fields; a dictionary cannot represent repeated keys as separate ordinary entries. Decide whether whitespace or capitalization can be normalized without changing meaning.

Handle extra and missing values explicitly
The documented reader supports behavior for surplus and missing fields through restkey and restval. Do not let those defaults hide a shifted record. Check each row’s structure against the approved header and report exceptions. A dictionary containing familiar keys can still be incomplete or contain unreviewed additional information.
Apply types and privacy rules after mapping
Values still need deliberate conversion and validation. Preserve identifiers and limit stored fields to the authorized purpose. Test an empty file, header-only input and a row with too few values. Keep error records safe; do not paste full private rows into a public log or treat unprocessed exceptions as accepted entries.
A practical checklist
- Approve unique required header names.
- Decide whether supplied fieldnames are appropriate.
- Review surplus and missing-value behavior.
- Validate types after mapping.
- Test empty and malformed row structures.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a synthetic export has two columns both called email. The importer reports a header problem instead of accepting a dictionary that hides the ambiguity. A corrected fixture is then tested with a missing value and an extra field. The mapping is reviewed before downstream messages or database writes are allowed.

Common questions
Does DictReader validate the schema automatically? No. Can duplicate names be safely ignored? Not when separate fields matter. Are mapped values already typed? They still need explicit interpretation.
What to do next
Keep the header contract with the import handover. Named fields improve readability only when their names and record shape have been checked first.
