Export Google Calendar when you need a portable copy of event data, then verify what the files contain. An export is a point-in-time snapshot; it is not a live synchronization service or a guaranteed restoration of every account setting.
Check export access on a computer
Google Calendar exports are performed on a computer rather than in the mobile app. The calendar requires the appropriate sharing-management permission, and an organization may restrict exports. Confirm authorization before downloading calendars that include other people's or clients' information.

Download and identify the event files
In Settings, Import and export, exporting calendars produces a ZIP containing individual ICS files. A single-calendar export uses its calendar settings. Keep the downloaded archive labeled with its date and scope, and store it in a location suitable for its sensitive event details.
Test the copy without polluting the live calendar
Inspect the files and, if a restoration test is appropriate, import a sample into a separate test calendar. Importing events is not ongoing sync. Google's import guidance also notes limits such as guests and conference information, so document what the test preserves and what needs separate recovery.
A practical checklist
- Confirm export permission and project scope.
- Export from the desktop browser.
- Identify the ICS files inside any ZIP.
- Store the copy securely with a date label.
- Test restoration in a separate calendar.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a project coordinator exports an authorized delivery calendar before an account change. They extract its ICS file and test a copy in an isolated calendar, checking dates and titles. They record missing collaboration details separately instead of declaring the archive a complete account backup.

Common questions
Is an ICS export continuously updated? No. Does import automatically restore every guest and meeting connection? Do not assume it does. Should a test import go into the production calendar? Prefer an isolated calendar to avoid duplicate events.
What to do next
Keep a recovery note alongside the archive, including scope and test results. Re-export after important schedule changes when a newer snapshot is required.
