Archived Trello cards are removed from the active board view without being permanently deleted. If a task seems missing, inspect the appropriate archive before recreating it and accidentally producing duplicate work.

Look in the board's archived items

Open the relevant board menu and its Archived items section, using More when the current interface requires it. Search for a distinctive card title. Confirm the board first; Trello also has separate Inbox archive behavior, so not every archived item appears in one universal list.

Restore the intended card deliberately

Open or locate the matching card and use Restore through the supported archive workflow. Check its content, list context and existing collaborators after restoration. Similar titles can describe different tasks, so inspect the details before bringing an old card back into the current process.

Separate archiving from irreversible deletion

Archiving is a reversible organization step, while deleting a card is permanent and requires confirmation. A card can remain archived until an authorized user restores or deletes it. Do not choose Delete simply to hide completed work when later recovery or an audit reference may be needed.

A practical checklist

  • Confirm the relevant board or Inbox archive.
  • Search with a distinctive card term.
  • Inspect details before restoring.
  • Review the restored card's workflow context.
  • Use deletion only with explicit intent.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a client asks about a previously completed delivery. The coordinator finds its archived card, checks the attached decision record and restores it for a follow-up. They do not create a duplicate card or permanently delete the historical one to tidy the board.

Common questions

Are archived cards automatically deleted after a fixed period? Trello's documented board archive keeps them until a user acts. Can a permanently deleted card be restored through the archive? No. Is Inbox archiving identical to board archiving? No; inspect the correct location.

What to do next

Use archiving as the default way to clear completed board work when retention is appropriate. Apply project retention rules separately before making permanent deletions.
