A freelance writing contract template should define the assignment
A freelance writing contract template is useful when it explains what will be written, for whom and under which review process. “Write some blog posts” leaves too many questions open. Specify the number of pieces, approximate length, audience, purpose and supplied research. This article is a US-oriented planning guide, not a ready-to-sign legal agreement. Have appropriate counsel review actual terms, especially ownership, confidentiality, termination and liability.
Separate research, drafting and publication
A writing assignment may include interviews, source checking, draft copy, an editorial review or uploading into a content system. These are different tasks. Identify which are included and who obtains permissions for quotations, recordings and supplied material. State whether the client or writer is responsible for final fact checking and publication approval. Access to an editor does not by itself authorize the writer to publish or make sensitive claims on the client’s behalf.

Make revisions finite and specific
Define a review round as one consolidated set of comments from an identified approver. Distinguish corrections needed to meet the brief from a new audience, changed subject or substantially expanded assignment. A hypothetical three-article project might include one draft and two agreed review rounds per article; that is an illustration, not a universal industry standard. Set a process for quoting additional work before undertaking it.
Address bylines, portfolio use and copyright
Discuss whether the work is attributed, anonymous or ghostwritten, and whether the writer may quote an excerpt in a portfolio. Specify the intended license or assignment rather than assuming payment transfers every right. The Copyright Office’s work-made-for-hire guidance sets conditions for commissioned works; not every writing commission qualifies merely because a contract says so. Supplied photographs, fonts and research databases may carry separate licensing limits.

Document payment and delays
Link billing milestones to understandable events, such as delivery of the agreed draft rather than an undefined publication date controlled by others. Decide how delayed feedback, withdrawn assignments and unavailable interviewees are handled, with locally reviewed wording. Keep the brief, approved outline, revisions and invoices together. If the relationship operates like employment, consult the IRS classification guidance and relevant employment-law advice instead of relying on a contractor label.
Common questions
Does editing include unlimited rewriting? Only if that is what the parties actually agreed; make the distinction explicit. Can a writer promise every fact is error-free? No process eliminates all risk. Agree on research standards, sources and review responsibilities. Can a client reuse an article elsewhere? That depends on the rights granted and third-party restrictions, not simply on possession of the file.
