Platform work versus direct clients: compare the whole workflow
A platform may provide discovery, communication and a supported payment process. Direct work can offer different flexibility but requires you to manage those responsibilities yourself. Define the kind of client and project before choosing a route. Do not reduce the comparison to one service fee or assume that removing an intermediary removes the cost of obtaining and serving customers.
Count acquisition effort
Track proposals, conversations, marketing and follow-up as well as delivery. A direct client may require substantial relationship-building, while platform competition can also consume time. Use your own records rather than a universal claim about which route pays more. Relevant demand and credible positioning matter in both cases. Avoid buying a system that promises guaranteed clients.

Review terms and protection
Understand the contract, dispute route and payment requirements of each option. Platform protections have conditions; direct agreements need appropriate documentation and local advice where necessary. Do not move an existing relationship off-platform in violation of its terms merely to avoid a fee. Keep milestone, approval and scope-change rules clear regardless of where the project originated.
Apply the same safety standards
Verify client identity and suspicious payment changes. The FTC’s job-scam guidance is relevant to unusual transfers and pay-for-job requests. Do not assume a direct inquiry or a platform profile establishes legitimacy. Limit access, protect private files and use supported account processes. A attractive headline payment does not justify an unsafe or unauthorized workflow.
Choose a manageable mix
You can use more than one route while keeping the service and records consistent. Review net economics, suitability and risk after completed work. Avoid expanding channels so quickly that delivery quality suffers. Neither route guarantees steady earnings; the useful choice is the one you can manage responsibly for the actual clients and tasks you serve.
