Remote job listings: verify the employer independently
Confirm that the organization and role exist through an established official route. A professional-looking profile or copied logo is not sufficient. Compare the listing with the company’s legitimate recruitment process where available. Be careful when someone claims an urgent private opening but cannot explain ordinary details about the work or who is authorized to hire.
Read the actual requirements
Identify duties, experience, location eligibility and employment or contractor status. “Remote” does not necessarily mean available in every country or time zone. Check whether required tools and availability fit your situation. Avoid applying based only on an advertised income figure. A legitimate opportunity can still be unsuitable for your current skills or constraints.

Examine requests for money
The FTC warns about paying for a promised job and fake-check arrangements. Stop if a supposed recruiter asks you to forward money, purchase equipment through an unverified seller or pay to unlock wages. Legitimate published platform charges differ from a stranger demanding payment to hire you. Independently verify unusual requests before making any transfer.
Share information proportionately
Provide only what is necessary at the current legitimate application stage. Do not send passwords, verification codes or unnecessary identity records through an informal chat. Be cautious about unknown software installations presented as mandatory tests. Use official account and support routes. Protect portfolio samples from exposing former client information while demonstrating the relevant skill honestly.
Record and escalate concerns
Keep the listing and correspondence if fraud is suspected, without spreading harmful files. Use the platform’s reporting tools and appropriate local reporting routes. FTC resources are U.S.-specific, not a global service. Do not let urgency force a decision. A responsible job search values verified fit and safe process over an attractive but unsubstantiated promise.
