OBS Studio screen recording should capture the intended material without exposing unrelated accounts, messages or client data. Plan the recording boundary before choosing a source. The right capture method and permissions depend on the operating system and application, so test the actual setup with harmless synthetic content.
Define what may appear in the recording
Prepare an approved demonstration account or synthetic document. Close unrelated windows and review notifications, browser tabs and visible credentials. Obtain appropriate permission for people, voices and licensed material included in the recording. A tutorial purpose does not automatically authorize sharing everything visible on the desktop.

Choose the appropriate source and output
Use the supported source that matches the task, such as an application window or display capture under the actual platform. Inspect the preview, crop and intended output dimensions. Window capture and display capture have different exposure boundaries. Do not assume moving another window or changing focus leaves the recording’s contents unchanged.
Record a short acceptance sample
Check the saved file for legible content, audio, boundaries and unintended overlays before the full session. Review the output location and available storage. OBS provides recording and streaming controls; confirm the intended action rather than accidentally starting a broadcast. The preview alone does not prove the saved file contains the expected result.
A practical checklist
- Use approved synthetic demonstration content.
- Review notifications and unrelated windows.
- Choose the correct capture source.
- Confirm recording rather than unintended streaming.
- Inspect a short saved sample before continuing.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a freelancer records a synthetic software walkthrough using the intended application window. A short test checks that messages and another client’s tab are not visible. The saved file is reviewed for readable text and the approved audio. The desktop is not recorded broadly merely because display capture is easier to select.

Common questions
Does a tutorial purpose authorize private content disclosure? No. Is preview inspection enough? Check the saved output. Are display and window capture identical boundaries? No.
What to do next
Keep a privacy and output checklist with the recording workflow. A useful walkthrough is both understandable and limited to material the creator is authorized to share.
