A PowerPoint slide master controls shared presentation structure and styling. It can reduce repeated manual fixes, but it does not automatically override every local edit. First identify which master and layout the affected slides actually use.
Open the master and its associated layouts
In the supported desktop application, use View, Slide Master. The larger master thumbnail has associated layouts beneath it. Presentations with more than one theme can contain multiple masters, so inspect the relevant branch rather than editing the first thumbnail indiscriminately.

Make the change at the right structural level
Use the master for elements shared across its layouts, and a specific layout for an exception such as a section opener. Edit placeholders deliberately; an ordinary text box does not provide the same layout behavior. Preserve the source presentation before broad changes.
Check representative slides in Normal view
Close Master View and inspect several slides using the affected layouts. Local formatting can prevent an inherited change from appearing as expected. Reapplying a layout may help, but review content placement and any Reset action before using it across the deck.
A practical checklist
- Keep a recoverable source copy.
- Identify the relevant master branch.
- Separate shared styling from layout exceptions.
- Use appropriate placeholders.
- Review existing slides after the change.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a deck repeats an outdated logo on several layouts. The designer updates the relevant master, then checks a title slide, a comparison slide and a section opener. One slide contains a separate pasted logo, which needs a local correction rather than another master edit.

Common questions
Does a deck always contain one master? No. Will a master edit replace every locally formatted object? Not necessarily. Is Slide Master view available identically on every platform? No; verify the features in the application you use.
What to do next
Keep reusable styling in the master where appropriate. Test a small set of layouts before applying a structural change to a large presentation.
