A webhook endpoint is the receiver URL and associated request-handling logic that a provider calls when an event occurs. Making the URL reachable is only the first step. Design validation, durable acceptance and processing evidence so a successful HTTP response does not conceal lost work or untrusted input.

Define the accepted request contract

Document the provider, event types, payload limits and verification requirements. Use the required transport security and supported signing method. Reject unrelated or invalid requests through the agreed behavior. Keep secrets out of URLs and logs. A difficult-to-guess endpoint address is not a substitute for verifying the sender and validating the message.

Acknowledge according to durable acceptance

Read the provider’s timeout and retry rules. Where the architecture uses a queue, validate and durably record the accepted event before acknowledging, then process separately. Do not return success first and rely on unrecorded in-memory work afterward. Response behavior should match what the receiver actually accepted, not simply keep the provider dashboard green.

Separate receipt from business completion

Record a safe event identifier and processing state. Make duplicate handling explicit under the provider’s event model. A received event can still fail when updating another system, so assign ownership for retries and reconciliation. Avoid logging full customer payloads when a minimal identifier and error summary provide enough diagnostic information.

A practical checklist

  • Define allowed providers and event types.
  • Verify requests using the documented method.
  • Record accepted work durably before acknowledgment.
  • Track processing separately from receipt.
  • Use minimal logs and a clear failure owner.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a receiver validates a synthetic order notification and stores it in a queue before responding. The worker later updates an internal record. A temporary downstream failure remains visible as pending processing rather than being erased by the earlier successful HTTP response. A repeated event follows the integration’s deduplication rule.

Common questions

Is a 200 response proof of completed business work? No. Can every provider use the same signature format? No. Should the endpoint accept any JSON? Only the contract and authorized workflow it is designed to handle.

What to do next

Write a receiver contract that names validation, durable acceptance and processing states. These boundaries make the endpoint easier to test and maintain than a single success/failure flag.
