OBS Studio Mode: Keep Preview Separate from the Program Output

OBS Studio Mode separates a preview composition from the program output used for the presentation. It can help prepare changes before transitioning them, but only when the operator understands which output the audience receives. Review other output features as well as the main scene transition.

Identify preview and program clearly

Use OBS’s documented Studio Mode behavior and label the intended audience output in the operating notes. The preview is preparation space, while the program is the active presentation under the relevant setup. Do not decide what is public solely by looking at whichever canvas currently has focus.

Rehearse changes before transitions

Prepare the next scene with approved synthetic material and inspect its visible sources. Test the chosen transition and resulting program output. Avoid editing a sensitive capture source on the assumption that every preparation action is isolated. Shared sources and other output routes can have consequences outside one preview frame.

Review virtual-camera and destination settings

OBS’s virtual-camera settings can select Program, Preview, a specific scene or a source. A camera configured to Preview can show preparation changes. Check the actual destination and review a controlled sample. Studio Mode alone is therefore not a privacy guarantee for every application, recording or secondary output connected to OBS.

A practical checklist

  • Distinguish preview from program output.
  • Document the audience’s actual destination.
  • Prepare approved scenes before transitions.
  • Review shared sources and secondary outputs.
  • Test virtual-camera selection where relevant.

Worked example

Illustrative example: an operator prepares a synthetic next scene while the program remains on an introduction. A rehearsal confirms the transition. The team also checks a connected virtual camera and finds it configured to Preview, so it reviews that destination before assuming preparation is private. Studio Mode is treated as an output workflow, not universal isolation.

Common questions

Does Studio Mode make every connected output private? No. Can a virtual camera show Preview? The documented setting supports it. Should transitions be rehearsed? Yes.

What to do next

Keep an output map with the scene controls. Knowing exactly what each destination receives is more important than assuming that every preview action is hidden from the audience.
