OBS Virtual Camera: Share the Video Scene and Configure Audio Separately

OBS virtual camera makes an OBS video composition available to an application that can use a webcam input. Configure the receiving application’s audio separately rather than assuming that choosing the camera also selects the intended microphone. Review the camera output mode before sharing a scene in a meeting.

Prepare an approved video composition

Use synthetic or authorized presentation material and inspect the scene’s capture boundary. Start the virtual camera through the supported OBS control and select it as the camera in the receiving application. Permissions and platform behavior can differ. A successful camera selection does not establish that the application is receiving the correct composition.

Choose the virtual-camera output deliberately

OBS documents Program, Preview, a specific Scene and a Source as output choices. Preview can reveal preparation changes, especially with Studio Mode. Inspect the actual setting and destination rather than relying on the main canvas. Do not expose private windows while assuming the audience sees only the program scene.

Test microphone routing and the recipient view

Review microphone selection, muting and any approved audio-routing arrangement in the receiving application. Prevent duplicate monitoring paths or feedback. Run a controlled test with an authorized participant or supported local preview. Check both what is visible and what is audible; a good OBS meter does not prove the meeting application receives the intended sound.

A practical checklist

  • Prepare authorized video content.
  • Select the OBS virtual camera in the receiver.
  • Review Program, Preview, Scene or Source mode.
  • Configure the receiver’s audio deliberately.
  • Test the actual visible and audible result.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a synthetic training scene is shared through the OBS virtual camera in a meeting application. The operator checks that the camera sends the intended scene and selects the approved microphone separately. A controlled test confirms the recipient view. The team does not infer correct audio routing from a working video preview.

Common questions

Does selecting a video camera configure every audio route? No. Can Preview expose preparation? Yes. Is the receiving application’s view worth checking? Yes.

What to do next

Keep receiver settings and an output-boundary check with the presentation notes. Virtual-camera reliability depends on the destination configuration as well as the OBS scene.
