An OBS video capture device source needs a compatible input, format and permission setup. A webcam and a capture card can both provide video, but their connections and signal requirements differ. Test the actual hardware and supported platform workflow instead of assuming every blank image has the same cause.
Identify the hardware and intended signal
Record the device model, connection and approved source material. A capture card needs the relevant external video signal; a webcam supplies its own image. Check current device and OBS documentation. Protected content or an unsupported signal is not a reason to bypass restrictions. Use a harmless test input within authorized use.

Review source properties and access
Select the intended device and supported resolution or frame-rate configuration. Check operating-system permissions, driver requirements and whether another application is using the device. Avoid forcing settings copied from unrelated hardware. A device appearing in a list does not prove it can deliver the requested format or is available to OBS at that moment.
Inspect video and audio paths separately
Review the preview and a short saved sample for framing, motion and relevant synchronization. A device’s audio may require a separate supported configuration, so verify it rather than assuming video means sound is correct. Check cable and source changes methodically. Keep tests free of private screens and avoid starting a public stream to diagnose basic capture.
A practical checklist
- Identify hardware, connection and authorized signal.
- Check supported device and platform requirements.
- Review format and application permissions.
- Test video and audio routing separately.
- Inspect a short controlled recording.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a synthetic test source feeds a compatible capture device. OBS lists the device, but the team still checks its format, access and resulting sample. Audio is reviewed separately. The diagnosis changes one boundary at a time and does not use protected material or a public broadcast as a test.

Common questions
Does appearing in the device list prove working capture? No. Are webcam and capture-card inputs identical? No. Does visible video prove correct audio? No.
What to do next
Keep the known-good device configuration with the operating notes. Hardware capture is easier to troubleshoot when signal, permissions, format and output evidence are separated.
