OBS no audio problems need a traced path from the intended input device to the actual saved or transmitted output. A moving mixer meter is useful evidence, but it does not prove every recording track or destination contains that signal. Diagnose one boundary at a time with a harmless test.
Confirm the input and mixer state
Identify whether the missing sound is microphone, application, device or another approved source. Review the selected device, operating-system permission and mixer mute or level. Do not add several duplicate capture paths at once; they can create echo or make the evidence harder to interpret. Check whether the intended source actually produces a signal.

Review recording-track and output assignment
OBS supports multi-track recording under the documented configuration. Verify that the audio source is assigned to the intended tracks and those tracks are enabled in the actual recording settings. A media player may play only a selected track. Inspect the saved file’s relevant tracks instead of assuming one silent playback means no audio exists anywhere.
Test monitoring and destination independently
Monitoring, recording and streaming are different routes. A signal heard locally may not be present in the selected output, and a recording may contain sound that is not monitored. Use a short synthetic sample and the appropriate receiving tool. Record the tested configuration and avoid changing unrelated bitrate or video settings without evidence.
A practical checklist
- Identify the missing source and selected device.
- Review permissions, mute and mixer level.
- Avoid duplicate capture paths.
- Check source-to-track and output-track assignment.
- Inspect a short saved or received sample.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a microphone meter moves, but a synthetic recording appears silent in one player. The team checks track assignments and the playback selection, then verifies the intended recorded track. It does not declare the microphone broken solely from the first playback or add multiple identical audio sources as an uncontrolled fix.

Common questions
Does a moving meter prove every output includes the signal? No. Is monitoring the same as recording? No. Can track selection affect playback? Yes.
What to do next
Keep a simple input-to-output diagram and known-good sample. Clear routing evidence makes audio troubleshooting more reliable than changing many settings at once.
