Python write JSON workflows should preserve the intended document structure, not merely turn every value into text. The standard module provides dump for writing to a file-like object and dumps for producing a string. Review supported types, strict interoperability and the output replacement process before saving important configuration or records.
Choose serialization that matches the destination
Use json.dump for a writable file object or json.dumps when another step needs a serialized string. Document encoding and human-readable formatting requirements. Do not assemble JSON through string concatenation. A Python object is not automatically serializable, and unsupported values need a reviewed representation rather than a blanket conversion to arbitrary text.

Check types and interoperability limits
JSON object keys are strings, which can change a round-trip compared with a Python dictionary containing other key types. Review handling of dates, decimals and non-finite numbers where relevant. The module’s default options are not a universal guarantee of strict acceptance by every external parser. Define the contract and validate it explicitly.
Validate before replacing important output
Save a synthetic document separately, parse it back and compare the required fields and types. Avoid appending multiple ordinary JSON documents to one file and calling it a single valid document. Preserve a recovery path for approved replacement operations. Successful serialization is not proof of complete delivery or appropriate storage permissions.
A practical checklist
- Choose dump or dumps for the destination.
- Define supported types and encoding.
- Review keys and strict-parser requirements.
- Validate a saved round-trip fixture.
- Protect existing output before replacement.
Worked example
Illustrative example: a synthetic document has a text reference, numeric count and explicit null value. The writer serializes it under the agreed contract and a parser checks those fields afterward. A date object without a documented representation is reported for review instead of being silently converted. Two separate documents are not concatenated into an invalid file.

Common questions
Does every Python object serialize automatically? No. Are JSON keys typed like arbitrary Python keys? No. Is appending another ordinary document a valid single JSON file? Not generally.
What to do next
Keep the serialization contract and expected-result fixture with the writer. A correct saved document preserves agreed meaning and can be read by the actual recipient.
